Why Some Countries Block Porn

The majority of countries do not support any geographical restrictions in terms of porn websites available via servers located on the territory of these countries. This is done due to a number of reasons:

  • these countries follow no-censorship laws;
  • freedom of information and freedom of access to information is granted to people of these countries;
  • websites that are allowed to provide content only to people who have reached the proper age indicated legally in these countries as appropriate for such type of content;
  • websites that provide porn content are legal and pay taxes to the countries whose servers they use.

Therefore, most countries that support the philosophy of democracy and believe that people know better what they want to search for and see, allow free (expect some sound limitation like access forbidden for children) access to such content and leave the ability of the citizens to use this access to their own better judgment.

However, other countries tend to block porn content. They not only forbid to create and host such websites on the servers located on their territories, but they also block access to websites hosted on other state’s servers to any citizens who are currently located on the territory of this country. Therefore, if an American comes to, say, Cuba, he won’t be able to find legal porn websites hosted on Cuban servers, but he also will not be able to reach porn websites that were available for him while being on the territory of the US, even if he has a paid subscription to such websites.

Reasons Why

The majority of countries that block porn websites on their territory do that because they follow a regime different from democracy. To such countries we can include:

  • Russia;
  • Cuba;
  • China;
  • North Korea.

As one can see, such countries follow very specific regimes that are far from democracy, or only imitate democracy. In all of these countries, information in censored on different levels, starting from newspapers and magazines, TV shows, and even private opinions. In Russia, for example, some people get arrested for stating their private opinions on their own pages in social media, and those people are not even considered influencers of any kind.

Therefore, there is little surprise that these countries also block porn websites from all citizens who are present on the territory of the country.

One of the reasons that governments of these countries offer as a reason for blocking different content is higher morality. They differentiate themselves are “more moral” than other countries, and therefore blocking of porn websites is a perfect example of such refined morality imposed on each and every citizen of the country. Another reason is governmental effort to protect children from potentially harmful content.
